HOW over WHAT

We had the talk this morning. Many times it is not about what you do that matters, but how you do it that makes the difference. With anything in athletics and in life-- you will get out of it what you put into it. Success, satisfaction, and fulfillment doesn't come from what you do-- it comes from how you do it.

Everyone goes to class; they're present. If you pay attention, complete your work to the best of your ability, study for the test, ask questions, remain engaged-- you can probably expect pretty good results. If you do not pay attention, don't complete your work, don't study difficult material, and/or are not engaged in the class-- you can probably expect poor results.

Anyone can go to the weight room, lift a few weights and say they worked out. That is what you did... what matters is how you did it. HOW was your effort? HOW was your intensity? HOW hard did you push yourself... or teammates?

On the field-- if you're engaged, coachable, focused, competing at a high level, practicing to the standard, learning from mistakes-- you'll get better! On the flip side-- if you go through the motions, take plays off, don't compete, practice below standards, aren't coachable, make excuses-- you'll never get any better... but you can still go home and say you practiced, right?

I have seen it my entire coaching career, there are those that think what they are doing is enough... practice, weight room, academics, etc. It is kind of like a checklist. Then there are those who focus on how they attack those things... and those are the ones who have success and get the most out of their opportunities.

Don't think about what you do, think about how you do it-- is it up to standard for where you want to go and what success you want to have? If not, then step it up! And do so with Discipline. Respect. Intensity. and Passion.
